The way chosen to drive to Stockholm crossed the Lappland from westwards to eastwards by the E10 road to reach the eastern coast of Sweden at Lulea then the E4 road.

Kiruna, the northernmost mining city is located at less than 200 km of the Finnish border. It is dominated by a immense “ground spoil heap” testifying to its industrial activity. Except the visit of the mine, it does not have much attraction. Curiosities are the clock tower of the Town Hall dating back to 1663, the exhibit in its hall of a sculpture symbolic picture of the Sami Pantheon and the church out of red wooden of the shape of a Sami tent.

The Arctic Circle is materialized by a set of white painted rocks, road 45 after Jokkmokk. Panels explain the variations in latitude of the Artic Circle of an amplitude of 180 km. The outward journey and return from the northernmost latitude to the southernmost latitude are achieved in 40.000 years!

I drove away by ferry from Stockholm to Turku, old capital of Finland, in 11 hours of crossing. This second trip in Sweden left a mitigated memory have regard to the distance covered, the bad weather met as far as Stockholm. The road of the coast has little tourist attractions, except salmon fishing. Only the interior countryside with lakes, footpaths, descents of rivers in canoe could have been a great interest.
