In the early morning I attended an exceptional sunrise on Stuart Hwy. I stopped at the end of the morning in Coober Pedy, world capital of the opal providing nearly 90% of the market. Around the landscape is sown mole traps created by the machines to sort opal stones from the gangue. Before the advent of air-conditioning dwellings were dug out the ground because in summer the temperature exceeds the 50°C. Churches are also underground. At the entry of the city, approximately 3000 inhabitants, a machine is as statue, to see Gallery-4.

Last driving day in the outback, I had lunch at the edge of the lake Hart. By arriving at the bivouac 80km away before Port Augusta a downpour fell brutally.

The next day in the early morning I noted that the roof of my truck was covered with white frost, altitude was of approximately 500m. In an unpleasant drizzle I drove in a very green landscape up to Burra then after having crossed mountains of average altitude the landscape became arid up to Morgan. Strange country where into a few kilometres the landscape changes completely.

After Morgan the culture of the vine, citrus fruits and fruit trees made their appearance, the climate is famous Mediterranean. The LP and the booklets presented the villages at the edge of Murray River as very tourist, alas the winter is the dead season. Not soul who lives, all attractions were closed only the mural in Berri was visible. I went on my way up to Moorpok where I found a bivouac at the edge of river.

I decided to spend Sunday August 22 at the edge of the lake Bonney to have rest there although the weather was particularly cold and gloomy. The city was dead and camp-site deserted. I continued reading the novel A town like Alice by Nevil Shute.
