From the USA-Canada border to the Canada-USA border |
|
Ah the beautiful days, still a divine day... I saw a bald eagle in the USA, a black bear and waterfalls with an impressing flow in Canada. Between the two sights I crossed the border without control in the USA and with a stamp and some questions justifying of the customs officer's function in Canada. This day was in spite of very gloomy, covered weather, snow, cold, a pass at approximately 1100 meters high and landscapes announcing the far north with scattered trees. For pictures in the USA to see the travelog of the USA. |

Sunday June 12 was sunny when I arrived in Haines Jct, crossroads between Alaska Hwy, Hwy # 1 & Haines Hwy, Hwy # 3. At the Visitor Centre I collected booklets and traversed the very interesting Interpretive Centre exhibiting the area with First Nations, Tutchone, and the arrival of settlers of which the very undertaking Jack Taylor. Then I strolled in the village looking for seldom sights. |

I entered the catholic church, the religious office was in hand. At its end the faithful cordially accommodated me by offering me coffee and biscuits. Of course I was the object of many questions, the deacon and other people spoke French. It was a great moment of user-friendliness, I learned that at the airport a plane whose pilot is a Frenchwoman, flew over the glaciers. |

I went there, a departure was announced with already three participants I were the fourth. Occupying the place of the co-pilot I had a superb sight on the glacier fields, alas the windscreen was tinted betraying the colour of pictures. For my feast day, St Guy, it were one day unforgettable as the previous year in Australia by flying over Uluru for my 70th birthday. I bivouacked in Haines Jct to publish my Internet site. |

On the move towards the Canada-USA border I stopped at the Interpretive Centre Tachäl Dhäl to document me. I met a hostess from Quebec who showed me with binocular Dhal sheep on the mountain. On her advicel I undertookn by this beautiful day a trek of 10 km return with elevation gains of 430 meters carried out in 2 hours 35 minutes pause lunch deduced. Of course I did not meet Dall sheep on my way, I should satisfy me with a picture take in the Centre. Landscapes were splendid, I were alone on the trail. At the return after the debriefing with the hostess I decided to find a bivouac at the edge of Kluane Lake. |

I left with regret the shore of the Lake Kluane to cross the border and to enter again Alaska. On the way there was only one sight Kluane Museum of Natural History in Burwash Landing, alas it was closed due to restoration! Outside two structures attracted despite everything my attention, a huge Gold Pan and a Caterpillar bulldozer of US Engineer Regiment which worked for eight months from March 1942 to November 1942 to build Alaska Canada Hwy # 1 from Dawson Creek in Canada to Fairbanks in Alaska. This road of approximately 1500 miles was strategic during the Pacific War, it was a challenge for which dollars ran freely. I lunched at the edge of a lake in the rain. |

Of course no check at Canada border, but at USA border to enter again Alaska the control was effective but symbolic because the officer checked that my passport was already recorded and the visa obtained at Skagway validated, duration 5 minutes. I carried on my road to find a bivouac at 17 km further away. But I had omitted to delay my clocks of one hour, I stopped too early. Look at the Alaska travelog for the trip continuation. |
