This trip was prepared in August 2024 with
the reading of two prestigious works “Byzantium” by Mazenod and “Constantinople”
by Yerasimos as well as Wikipedia of the eponymous monuments visited.
This succinct page cites Wikipedia hypertext links, encouraging Internet users eager for
knowledge to refer to them. Upon returning from each visit, a
favorite comment is written.
As a prologue to the visit to
Byzantium,
created in the 7th century BC by Byzas, to Constantinople,
created in 330 AD by Constantine, and to Istanbul
,
conquered in 1453 by Mehmed II, I cannot not to talk about Ravenna,
Emilia-Romagna, Italy which was the capital of the Western Roman
Empire from 402 to 476, then capital of the kingdom of the
Ostrogoths until the reconquest in 540 by Justinian, emperor of the
Eastern Roman Empire. The precision of dates and duration is useful
for understanding evolution.
The city is renowned for its
religious buildings, listed as world heritage, for its admirably
preserved mosaics, the creation of which was supervised by
Justinian, reign of 527-565, from Constantinople.
